Volunteers Needed!

Message/Request from Ryan Lidell:

For All Instructors & Students 2nd-kyu and above.

Brad Dingman is establishing a “dojo” in Ithaca. Previously stated, I feel we should support his effort. In my opinion that support should be in the form of qualified, quality uke, achieving two goals:

A. Establish Brad’s authority though model behavior and proper ukemi.

B. Assist Brad in his continued development.

Therefore, I have volunteered my time, one Monday evening every month for the foreseeable future. I ask that any student, initially 2nd-kyu and above, commit to one Monday evening each month, rotated as follows:

Tentatively, Brad wishes to commence on Monday, 8 Oct 2012. I will be there. Subsequently, I will assist Brad every 2nd Monday of each month until assistance is no longer required.

Volunteers will assist Brad the 4th Monday each month, one month per each student. Theoretically, additional volunteers will assist Brad once every 12 months, number dependent.

The following is a proposed schedule for the next 12 Months:

OCT:
Ryan: 8 Oct 2012
Student: 22 Oct 2012

NOV:
Ryan: 12 Nov 2012
Student: 26 Nov 2012

DEC:
Ryan: 10 Dec 2012
Student: NA

JAN:
Ryan: 14 Jan 2013
Student: 28 Jan 2013 – Weather dependent

FEB:
Ryan: 11 Feb 2013
Student: 25 Feb 2013 – Weather dependent, 1st Monday following February Recess

MAR:
Ryan: 11 Mar 2013
Student: 25 Mar 2013 – Weather dependent, Beginning of Passover

APR:
Ryan: 8 Apr 2013
Student: 22 Apr 2013

MAY:
Ryan: 13 May 2013
Student: NA

JUN:
Ryan: 10 Jun 2013
Student: 24 Jun 2013

JUL:
Ryan: 8 Jul 2013
Student: 22 Jul 2013

AUG:
Ryan: 12 Aug 2013
Student: 26 Aug 2013

SEP:
Ryan: 9 Sept 2013
Student: 23 Sept 2013

Dates we will NOT assist:
24 Dec 2012 (Christmas Eve)
27 May 2013 (Memorial Day)

Dates weather dependent (These dates still must filled. However, should inclement weather prevent one from assisting Brad, we will NOT reschedule):
28 Jan 2013
25 Feb 2013
25 Mar 2013

Dates need filled by specific volunteers unaffected by circumstances:
25 Feb 2013 (1st Monday following February Recess) – No Parents of school aged children
25 Mar 2013 (Beginning of Passover) – Respect our Jewish Students

This schedule is solid, regardless of Brad’s start date. Should he be unexpectedly delayed, we will simply begin our assistance at that point. I will be sure to attend his 1st class.

Thank you, Hugh, for being the first volunteer.

My contact e-mail is Domehead@rochester.rr.com. Please help out.

Ryan

And, one more bonus!

Following the exciting seminar with Rick Goodman this weekend, we will have another surprise guest instructor on Monday night! Dan McDougall will be in town for a conference and will stop by on Monday night. We expect him to arrive in time for 6 pm class.

It is always fun to have Dan teach so hope to see everyone in class on Monday night!

PS. There is no extra charge for this class.

We need a volunteer to cut 2-12' lengths of old mat foam and an appropriate piece of old canvas to create a demo mat... and come up with a way to store it in the men's locker room. Maybe on the top shelf?

This project needs to get done soon so that we can work on selling the balance of the foam and canvas and getting it out of the dojo.

If you can take on this project please see Marcella or Brian.

Volunteer needed to take apart the old shomen-

We have a volunteer!
Demetrius Demetris is going to disassemble the old shomen this Sunday during open mat.
Thank you!

------------------

Now that the new mat is in and camp is over it’s time to get down to business and get the dojo back in order.

We’re looking for a volunteer to carefully take apart the old shomen. The wood will be saved and re-purposed. We are hoping the wood can be used to make a “toy box” for mat side under the makiwara, an additional volunteer opportunity.

Is anyone willing to take on this task and complete it within the next two weeks?

Thank you!

Tuesday, August 7, 2012

Congratulations!

Please join us this Thursday (8/9) at the 7pm class to celebrate the promotion our newest Shodans Mark Tripp and Mark Panek.  Both made Rochester proud with excellent tests.

Almost there!

The new mat is installed and functional.  We are a bit cluttered and need to finish re-arranging and dividing up the old foam to get it out of the dojo, but we are open for classes.  We will gradually tension the mat over the next week or two before we trim the cover flap, until then just watch your step getting on the mat.

I am extremely happy about the outpouring of support this week.  The great fear of any all-volunteer organization is that no one volunteers.  We have again demonstrated that our group is full of people who care enough about their Aikido studies to take time from their busy lives to scrape, paint, mop, hammer and drill.  I am re-energized by the level of support you all showed from white belts to 5th Dan's.  Thank you all.

Oh, and by the way.  One more way Tiffin screwed up was making the mat larger than it was supposed to be (I say 'make' loosely as they are just middle men and didn't give the right dimensions to their vendor; who was actually very good to us throughout the ordeal).  We squeezed it in, at the cost of the Shomen floor space, some extra cutting of the border wood, and some of our mat tensioning range.  However, as best candy and I can tell, instead of losing 30 sq ft from the old configuration, we actually gained a few square feet.  So yes, it not only looks bigger, it is bigger!

I'd like to take a group picture on the Thursday after camp to send to the actual mat vendor as a thank you.  Based on some scheduling things, we will likely be doing post-camp belt presentation then (though I need to confirm that, so stay tuned)  Either way, when we do the belt presentations, please come so we can have a nice photo taken.  Harold - see if you can get the kids to sit still for one too!

Thank you everyone!!!

About the Dojo

Aikido Kokikai of Rochester is an all volunteer run group dedicated to the study of Kokikai-ryu Aikido. None of our staff or instructors receive any compensation, in fact, everybody pays the same dues! What does this mean? It means you will find a family of people devoted to a common interest without the pressure of dues contracts, constant testing fees for "tips" or "stripes", or restrictions on your learning opportunities. Sure, if you want a clean dojo you might have to pick up a mop or dust rag, but you will be cleaning right next to your instructors. A constant reminder that we are all always students.

Monday, March 12, 2012

It’s time for spring cleaning!

It’s that time again…time to clean the dojo and get it ready for the Gandhi Institute visit on March 31 (for more details see Bob Martini) and Cecelia Sensei’s visit in April.

Please join me on Saturday, March 24 after the adult class at 11:00 am to clean the dojo.

With a group of 4-5 people we should be able to clean the dojo in about 1-1.5 hours.

A list of cleaning tasks will be posted beforehand and can be done at any time before, during or after the scheduled clean up.

***Also planning on adding a few patches where needed on the mat. If you have hand sewing skills and can help, please let me know.***

Questions, see Marcella.

Winter Camp Info

All,

Winter Camp is coming soon, Please note that there is a correction to the phone number for the Clarion hotel we just received. The number should be:

609-452-2500

Also, the hotel just notified us that they will not enforce a deadline on getting the lower rate providing they have rooms available. I still wouldn’t take any chances, so register early.

See you there and please support your fellow students at the test preps!

Camp Test Prep Starts Monday, Jan. 16 -

Tis the season for test prep!

The winter session of camp test prep classes kicks off Monday, January 16 at 7 pm.

Test prep will run for 6 weeks, every Monday and Thursday night at 7 pm.

All are welcome but we will, as usual, kick it up a notch (or two). Beginners will be taken good care of so don't hesitate to come as well.

The first and last night will have video review in the 8 pm hour for baseline and progress as usual.

If you are not testing, we will need ukes of all types, so please come and support your fellow aikidoka.

Camp prep has been a long standing tradition in Rochester which, with your support, will continue to enhance everyone's quality of practice.

Thank you,

Marcella & Brian

Congratulations!

Just before David Nachman's seminar, we had testing for some new members. Chris Williams and Bruce Xu successfully tested for 6th kyu.

Congratulations!

Wonderful Seminar

It was a great seminar last weekend. David Nachman Sensei visited with his uke, Chris Burrell. Rochester's snow held off so we had a balmy 45 degrees for the seminar.
